"HDR" isn't just one cohesive thing, which is why this is confusing. Games as early as Half Life 2 Lost Coast showed HDR on standard CRT monitors. It would shift colour palates based on light and dark areas, though the monitor could not display more colours at once.
Nvidia summarizes the motivation for HDR in three points: bright things can be really bright, dark things can be really dark, and details can be seen in both.
However, all the newfangled talk on HDR is about the new TV spec, which supports more onscreen colours in a single pass with the new Rec. 2020 color space
So, not the same thing...A software effect to punctuate darks and lights vs an all new colour space which requires HDMI and GPU hardware support.
So if Sonys claim is about software, it's...Cool? But not to be confused with an all new expanded colour space, as HDMI 1.4 just can't do that.
